AURA'S GUIDE TO MASS DRAGS: for th8 clan members in war
I see a lot of people getting into mass drag attacks lately. That's awesome! I've made a humble collection of tips that you can apply at will. There's a wide variety of bases out there and no one way to mass drag a base.Note: this guide is intended for th8 players, not th9.
So you've decided to mass drag. Where do you start? First, if you're mass dragging a th8, ALWAYS aim for 3 stars. Stay within your range, and don’t try to be a hero: if you think you can only attempt 2-starring a difficult-looking base, just choose a different base within your range. You'll see higher level people aiming for two stars on mature th9 and th10 bases, but this shouldn't be a problem when it comes to mass dragging a th8. Leave it for a higher level player (for more advanced bases) or a player with a different army comp (for anti-air bases). Always PLAN for a 3 star. Even if you don’t actually win all 3, this goes a long way toward maximizing stars for the clan.
1. Mass drag army comp?
- 10 dragons: works well for most bases, especially with centralized air defenses, not many junk buildings outside the walls, and/or NO CORNER BUILDINGS (more on this point later)
- 8 dragons, 40 archer/wiz: works well for bases with corner buildings and/or a lot of outer buildings (barracks spread out, collectors all in a big clump, etc.).
2. How do I predict which way my @#$%! dragons will fly????!?!?
- As you may have discovered, sometimes, you just don’t.
- But you can minimize surprises by assuming three things: that dragons will attack anything in their way, that dragons will chase enemy CC troops, and that dragons will generally attempt to clear outer layers before proceeding to inner ones. Which leads me to:
3. Troop deployment tips?
- If there are a lot of outer buildings, you can use arch, wiz and/or Barbarian King to clear some of those out. That keeps the dragons from getting distracted or slowed down by them. If there are builder huts or other random things in the corners, put down some archers to get rid of these FIRST. Don’t wait for the dragons to fly around to them at the end of the battle. They are slowpokes and you might run out of time.
- Generally drop your dragons in a line (recommended) or in similar general area. Dragons have lots of health but deal relatively little damage, so keeping them closer together is best. On the other hand, try not to have them all clump in the same spot attacking the same thing -- they'll end up doing overkill on the same couple buildings instead of spreading out their damage.
- Be careful if deploying at a corner of the main base; it’s hard to predict which way they will turn and sometimes they may split up.
- Air defenses (ads) are by far your biggest enemy. This does not mean avoid them or put your dragons far away from them; it means put your drags CLOSE to them and destroy them as soon as you can.
- For bases with high-level, spread out ads, try to destroy 2/3 air defenses quickly, preserving as many drags as possible to clear the rest of the base without being taken down.
- If ads are clumped together at one side of the base, it might be tempting to drop troops on the half of the base that seems unprotected. This is actually a Bad Idea! It forces the drags to clear many other buildings before they can even reach the ads. This gives ads time to destroy your dragons before your dragons can destroy the ads! Unless the base is fairly weak, your drags will split up and get picked off before they can clear the whole base.
4. Do I lure out clan castle (CC) troops and kill them first?
- This step is usually critical, but for mass drags, you don’t really need to. Drags like to chase enemy CC troops and will often follow them deeper into the base where they can also take down important defenses. Be careful after that, because dragons like to veer back towards intact outer buildings once the CC troops have been killed.
5. What spells?
- 3 rage: My personal favorite, boosts speed and attack, which are drag weaknesses.
- 2 rage, 1 heal: A lot of people like to have at least one heal spell on hand. IMO with heal spells, most parts of a th8 base only have the defensive power to take down 1-3 dragons within a healing circle at a time, which makes the healing power redundant for many dragons within the circle. Helpful when dealing with splash damage dealt by grouped-together wizard towers or high level wizards in the CC.
6. When to use spells?
- When drags are within range of air defenses but haven’t yet reached them.
- When drags are taking down buildings with high HP such as town hall/clan castle (often next to each other).
- Try to maximize spells by including as many dragons as possible.
- Anticipate their flying path and place the spells a little ahead of the dragons so they remain within the spell’s range longer.
7. What goes in my own CC?
- IMO, another drag is nice. If you already have some archers with your dragon army, lv 5+ wizards can also work well.
That's all. Now go destroy some bases! You're free to pick & choose or adjust these suggestions according to your playing style or the base you want to attack.good luck <3 aura
