I started building legos 5 days ago using a free builder uniquely for them. Right now I have 40/250 walls done, but I'm not doing defences atm, I'm finishing all the elixir upgrades. I have already done X-Bows to level 3, mortars to level 7 and few levels of the new defences (AD, WT, AT and the new Tesla) and I'm planning to level 'em off while continue building the walls. Then I'll max out all the Teslas, and when I'm done with legos I'll finish the remaining defences (WT, AD, AT and cannons). The reason why I prefer doing walls first is because it begins to be a bit boring when they're the only thing the separates you from the next town.
I just started on my skull walls and i gotta say it is tough!
The funny thing about walls is that you realize how easy are the ones you're doing only when you move to the next level. Right now the skull walls look easely achievable to me, despite I struggled a bit getting all of them.
I truly think that when people complain about the cost of walls, they do not consider what the game would be like if walls were easily maxed.
Walls are what set regular players apart from hardcore gemmers and farmers.
People who say they are useless to upgrade after skull walls are quite simply WRONG.

Lavas (level 10) are where it's at. They require 3 maxed out WBs to breach them. That's just the most outer layer. A lot of TH10s have maxed WBs, so for them to have to have 3 successful WBs just to breach your outermost layer means 3 more successful hits on the next layer. xbows and teslas make short work of WBs too, so when well placed, WBs can often get shot down easily, making the attacker waste more of them, eventually running out and having troops wail away at super high powered walls.
Beyond its effectiveness, walls are completely necessary simply for farmers to have something to dump their gold into before they go to sleep if their storages are full all builders are occupied. This is a hugely important tactical strategy that most non-hardcore farmers do not realize.
Furthermore, walls provide huge intimidation factor. They give the appearance of base strength, often enough to make a player click next when the exact same base with same defenses would have been attacked if they had purple walls.
No one wants to be in Crystal league and have to click 'next' through an endless list of lightning walled bases. Walls are meant to be tough to get and are greatly appreciated when you need to dump gold into something useful instead of letting storages overflow.

I only get walls upgraded because once you get 8s you get a huge intimation factor!

I agree walls should be expensive to keep the OCD guys occupied and provide a sense of achievement for them. I know I'll never have the patience to have zap walls. Purple is one of the key levels as it takes 2 maxed wb to crack and these can be quite easily completed. I finished my purple walls at th8 without doing any dedicated wall farming. I just dumped excess gold into them. Skulls I think I could do in 3-4 weeks of dedicated farming but I don't think I'll be doing that. The cost/benefit is not there to go much furthrt than purple. Maybe just 50 or so bricks for the core.
