There ARE two styles of play.
It seems you're active enough to not have enemy attacks and if you get one, it will be horrendous but your raiding will make up for it. If you're able to do more attacking than defending you're all good and your defenses don't matter one way or the other. It would be really, really hard to raid more than you make if you're active.
I have a job and a life and I have to worry about defenses because it's part of my life. I can't be on that much.
I maxxed it all and that works for my game style.

Cancel, get those point defenses upgraded now.
If you want to upgrade and you had decided to upgrade, you would upgrade irrespective of what poll says. Why take the poll on the first place?
Definitely cancel the TH upgrade.
Work on maxing all of your defensive buildings, walls, bombs and air bombs first.
Don't worry too much about the lab research.

Im fresh th9 and I maxed out everything on th8 and I still have Problems, in G1/C1 i get wrecked with a farming Layout.

Don't cancel. A centered AQ, a 4th Air Defense, a 4th Giant Bomb, 2 XBows, and 2 more Seeking Air Mines is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> than TH8 maxed point defenses since your splash is good to go. Only idiots will think otherwise because now you'll be wrecking hogs, ballons, and dragons aslong as your build is good, which is something a maxed TH8 can never do unless the attacker is bad. And these are really common storage/trophy raids.
Sure you can get attacked by TH10s, but that is merely the same difference as a TH9 wrecking you as a TH8. But at least there are less effective army comps vs you. And the ones that can get you at TH9 you shouldn't worry about because you're not gonna have the resources in your storages to be worth it.
A semi leveled TH9, like you will be, is far harder to take down than a maxed TH8 and not only is that good for you its great for your clan. And with lvl6 troops, 20 more camp space, AQ, an extra spell, and a bigger CC it'll be easier for you to raid TH8 storage than a maxed TH8 can raid TH7 storages.
TH8 really is the red headed step child of CoC, and TH9 is a second golden age after the TH7 age.
being a premmie is not a bad thing,i was destroyed by a premmie th10 because he had max army camp and troops.he ,level 5 mortars,level 6 wizard towers and has level 8 point defenses but has level 3 infernos and level 8 walls.loot penalty only kills th9 that are in gold 3 n below .i say upgrade because your offence is good enough n those th9 wont bother anymore once you get those xbows
