You need to lay off the light orbs When I make those light effects I usually put them on Overlay or Soft Light so it doesn't pop into your face. Try that or lower the Opacity. They're way too strong

Try looking at Photoshop tuts since there pretty similar programs. Or search up using deviantart. You could ask Dragon or Jordan since both used to use GIMP

Ervin puts them on linear dodge(im 80% sure, I could be wrong) so that's why I put it on linear too. others I don't really like

Personally, I hate those over-brightened lights and thus Ervin's style isn't my favorite. I'm not saying he's bad in any way, shape, or form, I'm just saying that I personally don't like that style.
