Now I slowly seem to realise why the walls cost so much to upgrade. The loot used to be 1 mil 1+ and you could get lvl 9 walls in 250 raids.

Don't speed upgrade your town hall, being a level nine or ten does not help you if you have gold walls or lower.
These raids were only possible from th1-8 due to the bonus you got from raiding a higher town hall.OMG!

You need th9 to get level 9 walls. Th9 did not get any significant loot bonus from raiding a th10. A th9 would not have seen huge raids like these back then. The potential loot a th9 can get from a th10 is actually higher with the current loot system.
