Gonna have to disagree with your idea. The gem boxes are meant to give only you some free gems, and for me, the idea of attacking obstacles seems absurd.
When the gem box is dicontinued (like pumpkin bombs, santa strikes, christmas trees) it's something cool to have that makes your base unique. No support for this idea. Gem hungry mongrels...
