I guess it's less about the resource, more about the time.
Still, you don't HAVE to spend money to do anything in this game.
If that candy has Dark Elixir someone's gonna have a beat-up baby....

I donate Valks to my clan mates with strong air defenses in clan wars. One of my clan mates had 3 and they butchured the lure troops. But if you spread out your archers and throw in a wiz they fried pretty quick, there splash seems limited there
I've been using Valks/Wiz + Jump on some bases in Clan Wars, pick the right base and it does a lot of damage in a hurry

You don't have to spend hours straight on the game. If you are like unity sharp! he attacks every time his army is done. This way, he has the same effect, without being a no-lifer.
edit: I do not really like the term "no-lifer". It is just what haters on the forums say. For example, Brandon got his lvl 40 heroes done by barching for a long time straight. He implied he wasn't a no-lifer by saying he was overseas and that slowed production, showing he has priorities.

I wouldn't call all the people who farm L40 no lifers...
but I simply don't have or want to spend the same amount of time on the game that they must do. There is simply NO WAY around it, if you are farming your heroes to L40 or your walls past L10 you are spending A TON of hours playing CoC. I play waaaaaaaaay too much CoC myself and after a year I am only 600mil GG and 2 mil HH so I don't even want to imagine the amount of time others must play.
Besides time spent or money spent (gems) people often forget to overlook that most people never really use their de troops because they are always busy saving for their heroes. I personally loving using de troops often. I try to use most troops a few times a day so this adds up as well. I love playing mass hogs every so often, or playing around with valks and witches. I know many de hunters would never dream of this as it digs into their de savings.
I never plan on taking my heroes past L20. Ever. My BK is at L15 now and AQ just going to L11. I'll get her to L15 over the next 4-5 weeks and then that is good for a very long time.
All that being said. Maxed heroes are insanely powerful and a treat to watch. When I was in high masters as a TH9 I kept getting destroyed by virtually two heroes and some healers! Hilarious to watch.
