As was stated previously, its shorthand for us. We can gauge people without having to waste time looking at a base or profile.
Our clan was an open, all levels clan when I joined last year, which was good because I was a low level. Gradually we moved to invite only to cut down the riffraff.
In late January, I started our feeder clan and our main became 40+, which is still rather low. One of the main reasons was regarding very low level donations to our top members.
Since then, we have gradually raised the bar to 70+ (or 60+ from the feeder or real life friends). We are considering making level 5 archers the standard, as I have seen on many clans.
So, when someone requests to join, I look at his base and profile. If someone has a very low gold grab, I question how he would fit in our farming/war fighting clan. If their friend in need is low, then I can see he doesn't donate. Not good.
So, if some level 31 asks to join, we laugh and move on.
