Importance of mortars in anti-hog bases?

I was just wondering why people put mortars in the core of anti hog bases. I don't think they would do much damage to hogs, so are they for the clean up troops? I've been using the WDM during clan wars, and was thinking about designing my own anti hog base for farming. I'd appreciate your opinions. Thanks.

Edit: I have another question. Is it important at all to segment the layer of non-defenses?

To your first question, I think people like mortars for the same reason they like giant bombs. While they don't damage hogs enough to KO them like 2 giant bombs can, mortars at least damage ALL the hogs as opposed to point defenses. And as you pointed out, mortars also have the range and the capability to take out the clean up troops too.

In regards to your second question, it is not essential to segment the non-defense layer, but I have found that segmenting it can greatly reduce the effectiveness of the clean up troops as they have to break through more walls to get to all your resources. But, it is a personal preference, as most anti-hog designs are for trophy pushing anyway, where resource protection is not the top priority.
