Minion is called "Gargoyle"... and yes you can upgrade the gargoyle without having the barracks done. I am doing that. DE Barrack takes 3 days. Gargoyle level 2 takes TEN DAYS! I did both of those. DE Barracks takes a builder. The upgrade does not and is done in the regular lab.
