Use Archers/Barbs/Breakers and only attack TH9's with their DE storage/drills close to the outside of their base...then it's just a smash and grab. Try and target bases with 500 DE or higher. If you can take out the TH as well, do it, so you don't drop too many trophies. Take lightning spells with you so you can steal 200-ish DE with each cast to finish it off if you don't have any troops left. Or use them on mortars that will reach you when you're within range of the DE storage but a nearby mortar is also within range.
I say only TH9's because they'll get less loot from you when they revenge. TH8's can revenge and destroy you.
It is definitely doable. When I was in the late stages of TH7, I was able to raid and collect around 5000 DE per day.
I stayed around the 1500-1700 trophy range.
I used 8 dragons, 40 archers, 3 rage spells (usually I used 2 or less spells).
-pick a corner to attack from
-clear outter buildings around that corner (this allows your dragons to travel through the middle of the base)
-deploy dragons in a corner of a base in a ^ shape (4 per each side of the corner)

Thing is, its not that simple.
As a Th7 your petty leveled giants and archers wont make much as a dent in any bases that have good amounts of dark elixir.
This is why I reccomend upgrading dragons to level 2 and using the comp. listed in the post above me.
Once you are TH8, make sure you have the drill upgrading NON STOP until it is level 3. A level 1 drill barely gives any dark elixir...
But anyways, once you get enough dark elixir, you should start upgrading minions... level 4 is max at th8.
Then you will use a bit of dark elixir to gain ALOT of dark elixir by using Balloonion strategy.
Ever since seeking air mines costed gold, giant healer strategy was a hit or miss when farming for Dark elixir. This is why balloonion is used instead. You'll have a ton of balloons, the two you lose to seeking air mines arent going to be a problem. A swarm of minions protected by the balloons from Red air mines are such a devastating force.
If you've neglected your balloons so far, bad decision. Good luck getting your dark elixir.....
