1200 trophies should be a good range, but gold is good for dark elixir
TH 7 is the easiest to farm. When I was hitting hard and heavy I just trained all dragons and hovered in Gold 2. Before I finished my elixer upgrades I found plenty in Silver. I still have a TH 7 account that I never play but on the rare occasion that I do log on I can find 400-500k gold in silver just fine.
My advice would be to win your way up until you start finding loot.

I first discovered it at TH7 for the same reason. Got frustrated almost to the point of giving up. Searched multiple trophy ranges for days, and couldn't find decent loot.
I had the best initial luck around 80-120 trophies. The secret is getting in, staying online, and getting back out ("out" being over 200 cups, but 350-400 is safer). It will change the way you play - no more quickie battles and long retrain periods - but the loot is incredibly easy to get. And it is the style of playing I like, which is using minimal resources to achieve a modest return, with back-to-back battles.
I've tried the same with my son's TH6 account with nowhere near the same results. Underworld farming only really works starting with TH7 and I believe it doesn't really work anymore after you hit TH9 because of the loot penalties (or so I've read).

There are very effective ways to farm for DE in the UW also, which I have not seen posted, but which I use all the time.
A lot of Th6 bases here. ♥♥♥♥ them
Also, there are collector raids from the inactive premmies.
