When you attack you get gold/elixir and trophys. Plus is great fun. When you defend you get nothing. And no mater how strong your defense there is always someone that is going to beat you and take every single penny you have.

I completely disagree with the post above. Having maxed collectors does nothing really in comparison to the loot gained from offensive attacks. Over night i maybe get 100k gold/elixir from my collectors and about 6 mil a day from attacks.. You do the math.
I would max your camps and lab for sure then work up barracks depending on you army comp, all the barracks don't really need to be maxed unless you a higher TH or you like mass dragons.
And of course while your working up your army you should always be upgrading walls and defense anyway, so the question of which to do is really irrelevant tbh. I have all but one builder working on defense and offense plus lab running 24/7 and spare builder to build walls.
