It's clear that cheap shielding is very common in champions league and mostly in the top 100 global positions! For top players it's more important to have a faithful group of friends than really knowing how to attack a base... 
so don't ask them about GoWiWi or GoWiPe or what else they use, instead ask them how they find so faithful and accomodating clanmates; how they convince/force them; how they reward them. Maybe with money? In the past I heard that some top players reward the players that give them cheap shield with gems... (some players have spoken before about a sort of 'mafia') this is not chčating, I agree, but this is shameful, unfair, dirty. Cheap shielding doesn't violate ToS but violate the meaning of the game: in a game made to gather players in a clan, all the top players stay alone in their clan waiting for their friends to find them. This is ridicolous... and what's more usually they stay in their clan with the other 3 or 4 top players so that they can't hurt each other themselves. This is a race to be the most popular and the most helped not the strongest.
My dream is that the next time some youtuber interview a top player he doesn't ask him how he plays and how he farms and how he attacks, because these are not the keys of his success. The key to their success is the cheap shields they recieve from their friends. So these are some questions that I would do to one of them if I could have the opportunity:
- How can you find so accomodating clanmates?
- How do you reward them for being so kind with you? (They could next you but they didn't so they expected some reward, i suppose...)
- Do you think that what you are doing is fair in respect of the other players and the developers?
- Do you enjoy playing the game in this manner? Staying alone in your clan waiting a cheap shield from you friends...
Some of my reflections:
Clash of Clans is a social game: the social part is outstanding in the game mechanics. I have reflected a lot about how the social aspects occur in the game, especially in a clan and in the relationships between clanmates, and I came to the conclusion that CoC reflects the real world social aspects in their entirety: good ones and bad ones. And like in our society where the power is and where the money are the bad ones predominate. And sadly this is a inevitable human feature. Like in our society, in the lower clans the good social aspects prevail and everyone think only to enjoy the game: they donate without problems and rules, they accept the nicest guy and not the strongest, they laugh, no one would dare call someone 'noob' (like someone called me), they play the game like a 'game'
.
But when you reach the higher clan and the top players (as I have experienced) evil creeps, power game begins, the rules begin to be more important than fun, insults between players start, hate, envy, bullying... They call you noob, they force you to donate more, they expel you if you say something different from their opinions...
And the higher you go the most you see this bad social aspects.
So I think that cheap shielding is the climax of this exasperation. Like in the real world where there is a powerful man there are a lot of people that
throw themseves at his feet, in the game there are a lot of players ready to do anything to please the powerful guy on duty.
You would never see dirty power games in a parish lost in the countryside, but you will see them in Vatican or in the Parliament. Same thing in the game...
BUT
this is a GAME.
Why do we have to replicate the bad things of the real world in a game?
The only solution to this problem is that the players that are offering cheap shields to the top players stop doing it. If every players stop offering them the game will be more fun and more fair.
My solution?
This is not difinitive but it's a start: put your IGN name below and write close to it in block capitals 'I DON'T OFFER CHEAP SHIELDS' and add to it what you want. And if you know someone that offers cheap shields convince him not to do it, for his own good and for the good of all. The real problem is not who receive them but who offer them (like the mafia that ask for the protection money and the people that surrender to them).
