Thank you for the delightful compliments, but I really can not take all the credit. While the vision was mine, the bulk of the marvelous work was done by my tribe of Fred and Hildas.

Fred, whom I placed in charge during a recent bout of bronchitis, really took his duties to heart. He was a most thorough task master, overseeing practically every detail with such a single minded ruthlessness that I feared I would be forced to ask him to step down. It had come to my attention that my other Fred and Hildas were beginning to feel a bit put upon, and the name Simon LeGree had been muttered once or twice in my hearing, but in the end there was no workers' revolt and the results were spectacular! So I will happily pass along your compliments and appreciation to not only Fred, but the other Fred and Hildas too!

Now that my head has recovered somewhat from the soiree's festivities, I feel competent enough to give a fairly accurate accounting of the evening's events.

For all those who weren't in attendance, a word of advice to be tucked away for future reference....Glade's mead with gold flakes is divinely luscious... and absolutely lethal when combined with champagne cocktails! Before it was time for the midnight waltz, I was fearing a repeat of finding myself clambering from beneath blackberry brambles (which would have totally ruined my Gok Wan silk dress), but between hostess instincts kicking in and a discreet whisper in my ear from Col. Soldier reminding me of a later commitment...ahem......I slowed the intake of libations and was able to see all my guests safely home.

The Valley Regiment's scarlet dress uniform was the perfect compliment to the night's color themed events, and each officer did his post proud. Escorted by Corporal Franz Redjacket, Jude was a delightful confection for the eyes in her rose print cupcake gown, accessorized with pink shoulder wrap and matching jewelry. So tempting a treat she proved to be that it was overheard she inspired a few with a sweet tooth to yearn for a nibble!

Handyman, in debonair attire suited for a ruggedly masculine Aussie gentleman, had the ever vibrant Gymgirl on his arm, who caused more than one male heart skip a beat when she made her entrance in a floor length scarlet gown featuring a split to mid-thigh. It may be fortunate that Handyman and Gymgirl had travel plans before the night was through, or I'm quite certain that Handyman would have had to demonstrate just how handy he was in fending off amorous supplicants for Gymgirl's attentions!

The soiree's undenial fashion diva was GladeMaid who cast aside the convention of themes and arrived in a stunning leopard print with zebra striped overlay. Growls of appreciation and wolf whistles peppered the air upon her entrance, and despite the stampede she nearly caused, it was clear from the beginning she was not on the prowl. It was indeed a good thing that her escort Mike undertook earlier advice to accessorize his tux with a lion tamer's whip as later in the evening he had occasion to put it to use. Whether it was to keep Glade's stalkers at bay or whether it was to remind Glade who was in charge is still a bit fuzzy in my mind, I'm afraid, however I know I heard whip cracks somewhere between another mead and another cocktail!

Other familiar faces in attendance were Fred & Hilda, Fred & Hilda, Fred & Hilda, Mr. Snow & Hilda and dear Aunt Hilda and Fritz. Ever the May-December pair to call attention to themselves by their actions, they arrived by boat! Here's a photo the DD photographer snapped as they made their way to the receiving line.

    Lovely, just lovely!
"I've grown tired of the articulate utterances of men and things. The mystical in art, the mystical in life, the mystical in nature, this is what I am looking for and in the great symphonies of music, the initiation of sorrow, and in the depths of the sea I may find it. It is absolutely necessary for me to find it somewhere." -O. Wilde

Once all the guests had made their way through the reception line, the Valley Regiment commenced the night's festivities with a stirring exhibition of drill maneuvers. Colonel Wood N. Soldier called the unit to attention, then proceeded to order them through a sharply executed routine of formations. It was quite thrilling to see such crack troops at their finest, and such handsome fellows in their brilliant scarlet uniforms turned the head of many a maid in attendance.

Everyone took advantage of the time before the musical entertainment took to the stage to enjoy some convivial socializing. Fred and Fred quickly found themselves in deep discussion of the Olympics with Major Sharp Saber, who as a former Olympiad athlete himself, was able to provide unique insight on the games. Hilda, Hilda, Hilda, and Hilda gathered to compare fashion notes and to speculate about Aunt Hilda and Fritz's latest clandestine antics. Fred took a moment to inquire of Lt. Redd if the much anticipated visit of HRH Prince Charming had been delayed due to recent inclement weather. Mr. Snow, who was suffering from a chill caught while out during the latest snow and ice storm, ordered a hot toddy at one of the refreshment stations to warm himself up, knowing just how much the evening meant to his date, Hilda.

The first performers of the night were Syd's Syncopated Sheep. They were well received, at least by most of the ladies in attendance, although whether it was due to their musical styling or because all of the band members looked irresistibly cute and cuddly remains a matter of question. It was obvious that the gentlemen were far more entertained by their own company and more talk of sports and things military. Boys will be boys after all!

During the interval after Syd's set, Fred and Hilda went for some punch while Hilda pried Hilda away from Fred long enough for a quick trip to the powder room. Everyone was pleased to note that the couple seemed to have put their recent marital discord behind them, for without exception throughout the evening they acted like blissfully happy newlyweds.

Fred persisted in his quest to learn additional information regarding the royal visit when he interrogated Corporal Redjacket.

Mr. Snow took the opportunity to lead Hilda on a romantic stroll down Lover's Lane and explore one of the intimate side nooks. Upon their return it was noted that he looked particularly flushed. There were many knowing smiles and sly winks exchanged among onlookers just then, for despite his unwellness the mere fact that Hilda also seemed to be in the grip of the same fever led many to speculate their condition was a matter more of the heart than any of health. It was also not lost to any that Aunt Hilda and Fritz had disappeared onto Lover's Lane as well. In fact Jude intimated to Glade and myself she suspected there was a secret Aunt Hilda wished to reveal, but remained coy as to the exact nature of what it might be!

One potential blight upon the evening was discreetly brought to the attention of some officers of the regiment by Hilda. It seemed a would be gate crasher had been observed attempting to gain entry over the western hedgerow. The incident was investigated immediately, and the trespassing intruder, one Mary Poppins, Daily Dirt society columnist, was promptly escorted from the property with a stern warning that any further attempts to gain illegal entry could result in prosecution or even the axe she constantly inquires about.

The second musical act of the night was a particular crowd pleaser. Gary and the Goats performed covers of several rock standards such as Bang Your Head and Beat It, but their rendition of Jump really had listeners on their feet! Their onstage antics were so vigorous it was necessary to have Fred, ably backed by the colonel, to stand nearby for safety purposes. It was indeed fortunate that no harm befell anyone on or offstage!

After such a boisterous performance guests had worked up quite an appetite. A themed buffet was served and all proceeds went to LadyJEM's charitable foundation, the Philantrophic Organization of Caring Kitchens Ending Trichinosis, otherwise known as POCKET. The wide variety offered was met with admiration and approval, and the bounty was rapidly depleted much to the satisfaction of all who partook.

Once guests had satiated their hunger, it was time for the night's final musical performers. Much to everyone's delight, the valley's very own multi-talented break out superstars, Te Awe and the Snorkling Chickens, took the stage and in typical fashion instantly mesmerized every eye and ear.

For the evening she had especially chosen a Valentine's themed selection of songs. Included were such favorites as P.S. I Love You, My Funny Valentine, I Was Made For Loving You, Love Me Tender, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Can't Help Falling In Love (With You), Endless Love, I Will Always Love You, I Only Have Eyes For You, and Kisses Sweeter Than Wine. Te Awe's final number for the night, timed specifically to coincide with the much anticipated midnight waltz, was a devastatingly poignant version of Unchained Melody. The dance floor had not an inch of room to spare, as couples swayed oblivious to all but their partners.

So touching was Te Awe's emotional rendition that appreciative guests spontaneously passed the basket to collect tips for her and the band. Though she protested their generosity, her objections were overruled. "It amounts to scratch feed! Take it!" her fans insisted. There was simply no topping the highlight of the evening, and soirée guests began to bid their adieux and make their exits soon thereafter.

Postscript...Glade and Jude lingered with offers to assist in tidying up, but I wouldn't hear of it. Instead we shared in more champagne cocktails and gold-laced mead until HappyHelen arrived at 8:30 the following morning and found us quite in our cups. To save us from irreparable liver damage, she bravely and unselfishly finished off the champagne before she took her dog to the groomer! What a darling soul she truly is!

Wonderful report on the soiree festivities! The Major and I had a lovely time...lovely company, great refreshments, wonderful entertainment...and last but not least, an excellent hostess!

I loved reliving the events of the night through your report, but one thing I wasn't aware of was that Mary P. tried to crash the event! Where was I when this happened? I guess those from the regiment handling the situation sure know how to keep things quiet so as not to create a big commotion which could ultimately ruin everyone's time. They sure have been trained right by your Colonel!

I also wanted to ask...where did you find the champagne? It was heavenly! Did you have it brought in by boat?

Thanks again for a lovely evening! I look forward to our next event!
