Opportunity cost of excessive censorship in game

I understand the need for censorship and believe that most people, myself included, wish for a civil and engaging social experience. However, I also wish we had more freedom in the game when it comes to the social aspect.

I love the game and think there's many amazing aspects but just think that Supercell has drawn the line too close the side of censorship, which makes me feel boxed in sometimes.

Here's some examples of things we cannot do, because of Supercell's strong belief of censorship.

    • Search for players
    • Send private messages
    • Send players a rejection message when they try to join clan
    • Advance search clans
    • Keep an in-game friend list
    • Browse different globals / clans / chat channels
    • Add detailed clan description

I know there are alternatives like Facebook and the moderated forums but it's not the same. All these things would add a great deal of enjoyment to the game for the majority of players but they have all been scrapped due to concerns of how a select minority of people will abuse them.

Trolls will be trolls and they will always find a way to troll so why put so much emphasis into trying to stop them? In one example, the rejection message idea was ruled out in fear that people will send nasty messages. By that logic why can we chat at all if people can be nasty to each other? I always feel bad when I reject someone without being able to give them a good reason why (or what to improve on) because we can't always fit all the requirements in the clan description.

At what point does the enjoyment lost from censorship outweigh the hazards it prevents?

Let me know what you think. Thanks for reading.

It's very sad that we can't do the above things. Completely agreed with you, these need to be added, or at least to some extent to make the game more enjoyable

I agree with this. And what about the requesting troops message? Or requesting to join a clan message? You could say nasty things there too.

When someone doesn't fit requirements I accept the person then kick them with an explanation on why they can't be in the clan.

Exactly. If you wanted to be really mean you could accept them, then say something really nasty to them, then boot them! That would be worse.

Clash of Clans is not a social network.

    It's a game.

None of what Supercell is doing as described above is "censorship".

Private entities have a right to enforce and encourage community standards and/or discourage trolling.

+1. Hope they take a good look at this, because I'd love for all of these to happen!

I personally think that there should be private messaging so that they could have private time

    • Search for players- This would be fine as long as people have the option to turn it on/off.
    • Send private messages- Hasn't been ruled out.
    • Send players a rejection message when they try to join clan- You really can't imagine badness coming from this?
    • Advance search clans- Hasn't been ruled out
    • Keep an in-game friend list- Hasn't been ruled out
    • Browse different globals / clans / chat channels- Too much strain on servers
    • Add detailed clan description- Too much space on servers/cause strain

Only one or two of your things are REALLY related to supercell censorship. I don't see an immediate need for most of these things, and can easily see how some of them could be abused. (Like rejection message.)

He didn't suggest it was, besides it's the social aspect of the game that keeps it entertaining. Simply expanding the possibilities of being social wouldn't hurt anyone.
