Why reward players for passive play? Take a maxed TH9 or 10 dropping to sub 200. How much would he be rewarded for the multitude of single barb defensive wins while logged off?

No we shouldn't. SC should not reward passive play.
There is nothing special about winning a defense. It requires little intervention on your part other than copying a decent base layout and is completely dependent on your attackers sucking (or deliberately losing).
It also would be very easily exploited by the player community. Town hall sniping is gated by shields. Defense wins would not be.
