I just spent some time looking through the forums for ideas about what to do with free builders, and this is the best.
I actually thought of a much less advanced idea like this myself.
I would love to see Supercell add something like this. I currently am at townhall 7, and I have 4 free builders and an empty lab. If I could make some of my builders assist my max level collectors, it would be nice.
That being said, part of your idea contradicts itself. You say "When a builder is set to work on a mine or collector, that builder is REQUIRED to work for x amount of hours." and you also say "The builder can be stopped at any time."
I think that a better idea would be to have the builders be able to work on any collector/mine for a max of that collector/mine's level. Maybe that was what you meant to say. So one builder could assist a level 9 collector/mine for 9 hours max.
I still agree with the idea that the builder can be stopped at ANY TIME, however, after any collector/mine has been assisted by a builder it must rest at the normal collecting rate for a certain amount of time before a builder can be used to assist it again. This time could be something like twice as long as the builder assisted it.

Sorry for the confusion I should clear the OP up a bit. My current standing on how the time works with this idea is that a builder CAN work up to x amount of hours (not required, that is a typo). The builder can be told to stop at any time at no resource cost, but the cooldown timer will be initiated just as if the builder finished his entire "shift" on the resource building. The benefit for upgrading mines/collectors/drills is that it increases the allowed time a builder can work in one session or "shift," giving further incentive for players to cap their resource buildings.

Nice to see you back, iDANglin. Like a previous post mentioned, having the max amount of hours the same as the level of the mine/collector is a good idea. That way people would upgrade their mines and collectors, providing more loot to raid.![]()
