I don't really like to zap DE but at TH 7 I don't have much choice..
The reason why I don't just attack people for the Dark Elixir is because I know on most of the bases I would lose trying to get the elixir.

If I were Th7 or Th8, I would definitely zap, and especially from Th10s.

But since I'm Th9 now and possess much better army, zapping is no longer economical and effective.

If you zoom down to the minute and analyze it, it seems different.

Example:
You spent the last week Barching to Champ and made it. Tonight, you are finally getting some sleep. 5 minutes to bed time, you have 5 lightning (common for barching setup) spells ready, and you'll be brewing an overnight army after this raid.

In this particular situation, zapping DE is the most efficient way to get that black goo, and anyone who doesn't do it is a "noob".

Just to show that given certain circumstances, zapping DE can be the most efficient.

Actually it's based on critical analysis, as i have demonstrated.

I don't remember the last time i brewed 5 lightning spells, i usually only pack one. A single zap on the DE tank is not worth it to the point that i go look for it to zap.

However, as far as personal experience goes:
Last raid of the night, full spells, used all and left with one lightning. Failed to touch DE, i'm certainly not above zapping it with that last lightning.
