Why has "hide online status" been ruled out?

Do you have a better idea what "it" is then?

And why is it "up there" with things that bear no relationship to it and which haven't been given as reasons for many years now?

I have a few ideas, none particularly deep. Eg:
1. It's a small think not worth spending coders' time one;
2. It is only going to annoy broadly, for people to know that you are there and knowingly not donating. I guess this could be considered within the meaning of "privacy", just not "privacy" with respect to them gathering personal information.

It is "up there" amongst the history of glib answers to questions that have come from SuperCell. This is not a criticism, this is a silly phone game, and they can attempt silly humour in responding to what they consider unimportant questions.

If you want to know who is on, ask. Why would you want to know who is on but does not want to interact right now?

It is privacy. I can choose who can tell when I'm online should I care. That is not a glib answer. It is legit. For me, could not care less if people can see if I'm online. If I have time, I'll cook troops for you. If not, next person will. Nag me for not using gems, enjoy flying like a troop on a spring trap.

I don't think anybody has ever suggested it might have anything to do with the "gathering personal information" aspect of privacy.

It is about people not wanting others to know they are currently online.

You may think it glib, but I see no reason to suppose that is not the main reason they have ruled it out. They already show a count of players online, and they already show it to Friends, so the coding aspect would probably be trivial.
