I second what Conan said. I also have kids (2), a job, and other interests, so I can't/don't play nonstop. Like you, I found that the transition to TH8 was very difficult. I had nearly maxxed out TH7, but I still found myself with TH7 troops, TH7 defenses, and the TH8 loot penalty, and I was getting rolled by TH9s because suddenly 95% of my loot was available to them (as opposed to 50%). Frankly, it sucked, but it got better after about a month, once I had some level 5 troops and had my new toys upgraded somewhat. And then the new loot system hit!
Unfortunately, that's another issue you're having to contend with: the general lack of loot. I upped my TH about a month before the last update, so although the first month was hard
for me, loot was generally available overall. I can't imagine how much harder it must be for you given that the overall CoC economy at the higher THs is in turmoil and that TH8 seems to have taken the brunt of the impact.
At the risk of repeating the advice of others:
- Put your TH outside your walls and easy to get to, then put some traps between the TH and the rest of your base (where they'll only get triggered if the attacker tries to keep going after taking the TH). Ninety percent of the time you'll get a cheap shield out of it.
- Get the extra storages, and design your base so that each storage is in a separate compartment with 1–2 defenses. Make the enemy really work to get what you have.
- Buy all the new toys that come with TH8, and upgrade them. They're cheap and fast at first and provide at least a little protection/distraction between the enemy and your storages.
- Keep one builder free or on quickie jobs, so that you can pour any extra gold into walls before you log off. They can't steal walls.
- Farm for a while with fast, cheap troops (I use BAG with a few giants and wallbreakers).
- And finally, keep your DE stores low. It's in short supply higher up, so even if you have a decent amount of gold, a lot of attackers will pass you buy if you don't have any DE.
Good luck! You can get past this hump!
