    Mortar or multi

Which one is better? Or does it depend on the base?

None of the Gear Ups are worth it except maybe the Archer Tower in certain base layouts.

Their only true value lies in that they get you one step closer to O.T.T.O.

Multi Mortar is better as it fires its shots instantly when troops go in to its range. Meaning faster to deal damage to troops. Another benefit is divided shots which could hit troops with fast movement, regular Mortar has lower chance to deal damage to fast moving troops.
It does't really depends on layout since it has the exact same range as regular Mortar.

    It depends on the base.

All of the gear ups are very base dependent which one is better. Which is as intended - they aren't intended to give a general advantage over the regular ones.

Personally, I only bothered with them because of OTTO.

Gear ups to cannon and archer tower can make a QW harder. Higher firepower may necessitate use of a rage or freeze.

They can also make QW easier because shorter range reduces the damage queen takes when approaching the area.

So let's say you had x-bow, cannon and archer tower locked to queen -> she'd probably start to lose health. But if both cannon and arch tower are short range, only x-bow hits queen at first, and then cannon and arch tower only start to hit her one by one when she's very near and most likely about to target those next. They'll shoot queen for 3 seconds before they go down, and in the end queen didn't lose nearly as much health as she would've lost if they were all targeting here at once from far away.

That's clearly correct. It's base layout dependent. Personally I don't set my defences to short range, but there have been occasions where my AQ is dealing with other stuff (cc troops or heroes) and the increased firepower from a geared up cannon or archer tower has tipped her into using ability.

The gear-ups are not intended to make one mode better than the other. It's meant to trade one benefit in exchange for another, but also exchange one weakness for the other.

When it comes to armies with low health troops such as bowlers and witches (their skeletons) Multi-mortar is a lot better. Each multi-mortar's shell will kill skeletons in one shot same as single-mortar's shell, but multi's will have higher change to hit them with at least one shell, while single's might miss. Multi-mortar can actually kill more skeletons, if all 3 shells hit.

When it comes to more tanky troops single-mortars are better, since their shell deals much more damage then 1 multi-mortars shell. If all multi-mortar's shells hit example stationary giant, their combined damage will be about the same (maybe 1 dmg less) as if single shell from single-mortar. Difference comes to, then that giant starts moving while mortars shell(s) is(are) already in mid-air. In that scenario single-mortar's shell will hit him and deal full damage. While at least 1 multi-mortar's shell might missed him and resulting less damage dealt to him.
