Even the current iOS doesn't allow this to work anymore - I've tried. We are all still iOS 9 and the add friend feature doesn't work as GameCenter are clearly phasing it out already pre iOS10.
It disappoints me that SuperCell knew about this since June and have no concrete answers for us on the eve of iOS10.
