Great post, bear. One worth reading on General for a change
I wrote long ago about monetizing lack and it's been more and more clear for quite many updates now, that it is the way SC has chosen to make money. It's quite different style from "happy customer is a paying customer" ideology, that some other games use.
As the effects of gem boosting is mostly concering farmers, I won't go into the trophy hunting. Trophy pushing farmers still play the game whole different way than "real" cuppers. (Although, the big dogs could play it like that, but what's the fun in waiting for troops?)
Cheap boosts would definitely make big amounts of people spend small amounts of money, no doubt about that. But it would also take away a big portion of resource gemming, that obviously is still a common way to play (looking at bases and profiles of the owners it's possible to estimate such). The new 20/4hr boost is useful only for the more dedicated players, which, according to that article that was circulating here, places more than a third of all players in that group. The amount of casual gamers was relatively low compared to other mobile games as well.
So SC made a clear strategy on who to accomodate and monetize from and the rest will just have to adapt their gaming or spending habits. Will this bite them in the behind? - Time will tell. The old system did allow all kinds of players to play how ever they wanted and the 1 gem boost time did allow many to speed things up a bit and actually play the game, not wait the game. Definitely it was a hoot and a half for many, but as there's no "happiness measurement" in the game, the statistics will rely heavily on raw numbers: money and time spent on the game.
To conclude my post, I doubt a permanent 1gem boost would find it's way to the game. A small fraction (those, who think it'd be good) of a small fraction (forumers) of all players will not get SC to change their ideology. The fanboys are still too many to defend the honor of SC here, so all this will be buried and forgotten. To me, this thread was a nice breeze from the past but it'll pass soon enough.
Peace.
