I'm th9 currently at 2500 trophies trying to push to masters. Right now I'm using Mavios' black hole design and not having much luck. My question is what base design would you recommend for me? Thanks!

The first design is good if you want to protect your Dark Elixir (swap it with the Clan Castle). X-Bows have to be up here to stop loonions killing you.
The second has a bigger core and I think is a better, more rounded layout. Here I have one X-Bow pointed down, awesome against any ground attack.
Look at Nitram's defence report from his time in Masters. If that looks acceptable to you then go for it.
But generally speaking you don't defend your way to Masters. You attack your way there.

I'll have to give it a try, thanks so much for the fast feedback! The only reason i say something is because I've been getting two and three starred recently and I'm just tired of it.

To be honest, I haven't got a clue. Give it a whirl and see how it goes. Stay logged in, attack a lot and just hope for a small spanking when going on defence. That seems to be the common pattern in all successful trophy pushing. The first time I went to masters I did it using The Farming Ringus. Every time I logged out I'd quickly get sniped by a TH7/TH8 trying for their first masters. They were then on my revenge list for a good three-star rofl stomping whenever I could secure one. Didn't work all the time (especially if I had any loot to speak of) but it worked for me.
