    Check out this thread:

Yes, you can look on other people's farms for them. If you do it right, there will be one on every farm you visit.

You cannot open the locked ones without diamonds, but you can find a lot more boxes, and so get a lot more goodies.

(Using the tips in the link, I got a pink and a green voucher, panels, two duct tapes, coins and some nails tonight.)

Yes, most are locked. Not sure what the ratio is, but it seems like I get one open box for every 20 locked ones. Though it's weird. Sometimes I'll get three in a row that are open, and sometimes there will long stretches (like, 50 boxes) where they are all locked.

You just have to keep trying.

I love the idea of using the friends tab to go directly to Greg's farm, then just stay on his farm to get the box to unlock. Boxes on his farm almost always are at one of only 3 or 4 locations, which cuts down on searching.

As usual, touch the box, then don't close it, just touch anywhere else besides the box. Then refresh his farm, then repeat until you get an opened box. If you keep the friends tab open, you can refresh his farm just by touching his name on the tab. Don't need to go back to your own farm to let things reset.

But once you do get an opened box, go back to your own farm for a couple minutes, then you can start the whole thing over. There's a thread on here that explains this wonderfully, just don't know the link.

    happy treasure hunting!

    I recommend a different strategy.

On other threads, people have said I am full of it (or something to that effect), but I don't do the "click elsewhere, refresh, click again" thing because I think it is a horrendous waste of time. Instead, since I think that the probability of the treasure chest opening has something to do with the number of XP you have generated during your visits to other farms since your last open treasure chest, I don't usually bother looking for a treasure chest unless I have just helped their boat or revived some trees. After helping a boat, I find that the probability of an open box is about 1 in 3 (or even better).

My way is a more efficient use of your time. Try it, you might like it.

On your own farm, you can control where the treasure chests pop up by blocking spots that you don't want them to pop up in. That's part of the reason why there are so many fruit trees and bushes on my farm--it forces the treasure chest to pop up on my driveway, and nowhere else.

Interesting. I'll have to try that.

Me, I don't spend a lot of time looking for boxes. I'm too busy speeding through the newspaper ads, because I'm convinced the next one will have 10 planks and 10 nails, if only I can get there before anyone else. ;-)

However, I am in the habit of quickly glancing over the driveway and house as I'm going from the RSS back to the mailbox. Seems like 1/3 of the time, the box is in the driveway or near the house. Perhaps because some farms are so crowded there's nowhere else for the box to be.

Well, Powdermonkey's theory doesn't work for me. I've helped a lot of boats tonight, but my luck with toolboxes has been pretty bad. Got a saw (about the last thing I need) and some coins. I usually have a lot more success. Yesterday I didn't help much, but got a lot more loot. Including vouchers, bolts, nails, and diamonds.
