What’s the best way to manage trophy level?

I’m a relative beginner (TH8) but I’m really enjoying the community, especially how willing experienced players have been to help.

My latest question arises because I find myself sometimes losing multiplayer clashes on purpose because I don’t want to go to the next level and get paired with opponents that I can’t beat. Is there any merit to this strategy? Also, how do you know when you’re ready for the next trophy level?

That strategy is called "farming" and it is very popular. In fact, many will tell you that you shouldn't focus on trophies at all and should only focus on getting easy loot. They're wrong of course in the sense of it being an absolute...you should focus on whatever you find to be the most fun.

Personally, when I was a lower hall I liked to mostly farm, but now and then I would push up in trophies as high as I could for a week or two, then use all goblins to hit collectors and fall way back down. Trying to go as low as possible in trophies can be an interesting experience as well.

Contact SC here. Click here for how trophies are calculated. An idea to improve legends here. I wish max players had a separate loot bank as described here. Caution, I often discuss for the sake of discussion and enjoy having my opinion challenged (or approved of) even when I care little about the actual issue. My balance wish: get rid of tornado trap, make it a decoration.

True, there are all sort of people. There are people in my clan that are th11 and pushing all the way to legends while there are close to max th13 "looting" in crystal league.
I share the same opinion as 2222. Most of the time when I was th 7-11 I was lotting in crystal. Occasionally I was trying to push the trophies (especially for gem rewards) to see how high I can get and then dropping down to find dead bases for easy loots.
Also if nobody told you yet, at the lower th levels don't spend gems on anything else until you've build the max number of builder huts.

To add to what others have already said, not only is there merit to the strategy, it's also IMO one of the nicest, most important aspects of the game: the ability to control your trophy count. You'll usually know pretty quickly when your chosen trophy league isn't working out for you, because you'll no longer be enjoying the experience. If the game becomes too much of a chore and you're losing more than you'd like on defense or not gaining as much as you'd like on offense, change your league. We see lots of posts from people who drive themselves absolutely miserable because they've set too a high bar for themselves and then refuse to accept that the desire doesn't match the experience. The higher you go, the fewer "easy" opponents remain.

Yeah, that’s a very helpful perspective. Thanks, Sharky.
