you can upgrade both your heroes simultaneously
and for now stop rushing , concentrate on fixing your rush

put a hero down as often as you have enough DE, both of you can, doesn't matter which one try to get them both to 10 ASAP

Okay since you are rushed, You will have to be active a lot more time! I would suggest maxing your offence before defence
