Apparently there is a 'grace period' when the app closes, though I am skeptical. I have certainly been raided immediately when it has reloaded after the out of synch message or simply crashing.
It was great fun losing 20 plus trophies when on the verge of hitting Champion for the first time through no fault of my own.
If there is a grace period, it must be less than a minute... I closed the game, went to the fridge to get a drink and when I got back I was in the process of being robbed. All over a period of about two or three minutes.
Why the freak would you close the game, whilst going just to the fridge? lolz

It was mentioned by one of Supercell lot. It certainly isn't minutes, I got the impression it was a few seconds to account for the possibility of the game closing unexpectedly for one reason or other.
Even then I have my doubts, I certainly didn't get it.
