How to pick the right strat for war

Im a brand new th11. with not much war experience and ive always struggled with picking the right strategy for the base. Any tips for example when to use hogs or when to use bats.
    Thanks

For hogs: look at how close or far apart defenses are. If defenses are clumped together (tightly packed, bunched up, etc.), then hogs would work as they'll stay together longer.
If the defenses are spread out, then hogs might not work.
For bats: 2 things to look for: 1) infernoes. If they are set to single, bats will work. Multi, they'll fail. 2) splash defenses, mainly wizard towers. Are they covering infernoes? If so, then nope on bats, if not, then possibly.
Bats are dependent upon how many defenses your army can take out.
I once got a 3 star on a weak th12 using pekkabobat, b/c all of his x-bows and most of his wizard towers were on one side of the base, along with the ea and th. My main force took out over half the base before I dropped bat spells on the backside which took out most of the remaining defenses.
Short answer: it all depends on base layout.
