why do higher level TH's get more trophies from me?

I've only been playing for a week or two, and there are a few things I don't understand.

As a TH4, when I'm out raiding, I usually see between 15-17 trophies available. In the last two days, I was raided only twice, and I lost 25 trophies to a TH5, and 19 to a TH6.

Why were these two guys, with armies that completely overmatch my rather pitful defences, able to take more trophies from me than I can from someone at the same TH level as me?

TH has nothing to do with it. Lower trophy count attacking a higher trophy count stands to win more trophies.
Higher trophy count attacking lower trophy count stands to win less and lose more trophies.

Okay, I guess that makes sense. I guess I figured there'd be some sort of penalty for attacking lower level TH's, since a TH6 has access to an army that is vastly superior to the defences a TH4 can come up with.

It's because trophies aren't determined by town hall level. They are determined by trophies, you are probably too high up in trophies, and they attack you with fewer trophies than you, thus making them gain 20 + trophies in one battle.

How do you get "too high up in trophies"? doesn't seem like something you can have too many of.
