Because of this thread, I've stopped collecting gems from the mine as often as I used to..

Currently have 6/18 sitting in there :-)

I'll try to wait with the collection until I get the "your gem min is full, buddy boy"-message

Just collected 20 from my big account. didn't get the message. just clicked, I forget and how do you check on how many are in there without collecting ?

Click a wall, then click the gem mine.
Click the Info button, voilà.

since builder base collectors need 12 hour login, i usually click on gem mine also if it shows green
maybe 3 was the maximum

Mine was 14. I wanted to fill it up but clicked it by mistake and PUFF... Then I collected it at 10 and got bored so sometimes I collect it while sometimes just waiting and again the PUFF... thing happens.

A couple of hours ago I collected 18 (level 7, so it was full). I let it sit at 18 for hours, but never got an indication it was full.
