Nothing here stays the same forever. You must learn to change as the game changes, or clash will force you one way or another.
18 gems while 20 is the maximum for level 8 Gem Mine.
I usually collect it when it piles up above 12 or 14.

4.3 gems per day (at on Clock Tower boost it will be 4.5 per day). In a month you will get around 135 gems. Wow
i hav lvl7 but wont upgrade it to lvl8 until i get some more troops & BM to max. i always collect when its full at 18.
i just wait till it stops rolling so that i know its full. then i collect.
I think 12 but I'm not sure. What is the max a BH4 can hold. That would be how many because I have two that I used to never check on. I do now, once clan games started I got them up to Th6 so I could get them in clan games. One is now a TH7 and I MIGHT start taking it to war. The other side is constantly getting in one more TH9 than we have by bringing in lower THs at the bottom but it hasn't hurt us so I probably won't bring the 7.

I tend to wait as long as I can, to not lose out on partial gems too often, as explained by others above. I usually collect 7-12 gems, with a lv4 mine.

It's better to let them build up. You lose the 0.01%-99.99% of a gem that was being cooked every time you click it. So if you let it build up to 19 or 20 gems (at max), the amount you lose from click will be less on the average.
Or, what I do is, when I'm playing a lot, I keep checking the mine like every 5-10 minutes. And whenever I see it count up 1 gem, I click it then and lose at most 10 minutes of mining time. I usually click it at 1, 2 or 3... but it would be better if I waited til I was at 15-19 before doing the trick for the reasons I mentioned - I'm just impatient.
Ouch, you've lost tons of .5 gems this way.
