I generally farm masters, without gems. so i guess i made it. been to 3000 without gems. Had to quit, because i would have had to just stay online all day or buy gems.

You really do just have to have your say on almost every post don't you? It's just incredible how much attention you require.
As for the (very old) OP of course it is possible, just veeeeeery time consuming. This past week I've climbed to 2840 trophies without gems but I have to be honest when I tell you it is mind numbingly boring and not fun in the least. At this point (well, around 2600 actually) it becomes a game of how long you can stay online, nothing more. I for one don't wish to spend 6-10 hours per day on CoC so it is near impossible to progress quickly. I play for two or three hours to make 40 trophies getting 50% with loonions only to get hammered on for -10 to -30 trophies when I leave the game (because you know, real life is out there). Then of course, the odd loss does happen so it some days you play for 2-3 hours for no trophy gain.
So from my first hand experience this last week, it is of course possible, but only those who can stay online 6 hour blocks each day to pull it off "quickly". I'd love to try and make a run for champs at TH9, but it is too mind numbing to even try. I'll stick around here for a week during my clans one week push starting tonight, then go back to my usual range where the game is actually fun for me in gold and crystal leagues.

The one thing in my life is to never believe what you hear on the internet some people are liars and some are truthful only you can be the judge.
I can tell you when you are in Master 2 and above you will at least gem your troops, heroes and spells to keep a consistent flow going to gain trophies fast without waiting for troops to finish training unless you are online for a long time.

Depends on the following factors:
1) how developed is your base
2) how good you are at attacking
3) how long can you stay online.
Note that a completely maxed out TH10 (heroes included) can defend its way to Champ League. So if you managed to farm your defenses and heroes to a fairly developed level, defense is actually your friend in M1.
Offense. Well, if you are capable of raking in 15 to 20 cups per raid every raid, reaching champ would be a walk in the park for you.
Online duration. Maximize it by playing 3 to 4 six-hour sessions per day and you would reach Champ sooner.
So the question i throw back to you is, how developed is your base and how good you are at attacking?
I'm 10 trophies away from master 2 without gemming, I will let you know if i can make it to champion.
I havn't paid for any gems but i 'very used gems from achievements trees and bushes, and I'm th10 in masters 3
just make sure you do 2 three star raids in a sesh and hopefully get 1 starred for that sesh, take a break or go to sleep rinse and repeat.
