The sanctuary is an area where you gather puzzle pieces (from derby, boats, WoF, and chests) and get animals. You feed them 'herbivore feed' which consists of 75 wheat. When woken up, they're like pets - give 25 experience and the occasional bonus item. Some townies (not personal train townies) will visit the area and leave an extra gift!
Collecting animals is not a fast process, for the record!
You have also missed the flower shop machine, sunflowers and peonies, themed Derbies...
The best way to catch up would probably be to go to the announcement section and read about the updates for the past year?

I would say the biggest change is there is a heavier focus on the town as derbies include town tasks.
