There are several ways people can buy your goods without an advertisement placing it into the Daily Dirt (DD)newspaper.
The most common and well known are:
Neighbors who you've connected to through Game Center or Face Book
People you are following
People who are following you
Those that folks don't realize or forget:
Farms you visited through the DD and you watered a plant or filled a boat (you are on their last helper tab)
The leaderboard (found on the dock)
During the global events, the top contributors are listed and can be visited
This question has been asked numerous times. There may other ways, but those are what I can recall at the moment.
