    FAQ - Matchmaking

FAQ 1. SuperCell could you respond to my rant, consider my proposal, or answer my questions about the matchmaker?

SuperCell spokespersons have indicated they check the forums, and the ideas/suggestions subforum in particular, but their response rate to individual posts is roughly zero. Best chance for visibility to SC of your great idea? The ideas & suggestions forum. Best chance for visibility to SC of your bug/problem? The bugs/problems forum. Want to argue with other morons about clan wars? You're already in the correct forum!

But you are extremely unlikely to get an official SC response about anything, anywhere. This whole site is more of a user forum. Here's a rare response to an idea, largely just confirming that SC reads proposals in the ideas forum but won't get into a back & forth about them. https://forum.supercell.com/showthre...1#post11462624

FAQ 2. SC we've got a horrible match take a look. How did this happen?

The answer may be a simple as, the matchmaker is far from perfect. You can try to bring it to SC's attention here - https://forum.supercell.com/showthre...for-science%29. You will not get a response.

There may be issues with your roster as well however, that make fair matching difficult. Running uncommon lineups (odd TH spreads, defenseless, th3 ringers, even mild engineering such as .5s) can lead to strange matching in your favor or against you, long searches, or even no match at all (increasingly common in 2018). On the other hand, most warring clans are small (5, 10, or 15) so odds of a good match are better with smaller rosters. Put up your clan tag along with the specific issue (often, "other side has more th11s") and allow visitors if you'd like the members of the forum to take a look and offer advice.
Due to how complicated the issue is, partial information isn't helpful. Do not bother noting the townhalls involved, or a few select 'mirror matches'. Put up your clan tag so we can see what's up.

    FAQ 3.How does matchmaking work?

Here's the official answer from SC, appears to have been updated around 3/2018. Note this isn't a customer support reply to a ticket (which are unreliable), its a formal post on the SC support webpage.

Clans will be matched up based on the overall strength of its members. Strength is based on each member’s attacking power (troops, army camp capacity and spells) and defensive power (defense buildings, walls and traps). Heroes constitute towards a player's offensive and defensive power.
Unlike the Multiplayer mode, trophies do not factor in when clans are matched. Town Hall levels aren't a deciding factor in matchmaking either. Only once a player has built the defenses unlocked at his Town Hall level and upgraded to the new troop levels does his weight begin to increase. Therefore the presentation of Town Halls in the Battle Map (whether they are above or below your level) can't be taken as an accurate representation of the opposing team's strength.
Matchmaking aims to match Clans with similar ratios of offensive and defensive power against each other. Matchmaking will always try to find matches within a tolerable time however, causing variety in the quality of matchups.
Different layouts and base designs do not affect strength. The only way a member’s strength can be changed is if they upgrade their troops, defenses, spells, etc.
Finally, matchmaking will factor in Win/Loss records. This ensures that your opponents are worthy adversaries.

A couple of things to note.
Recent war performance has been acknowledged as a factor but this is not necessarily the same as win streak.
SC has previously mentioned of a "balanced base checkbox," but in the Feb. 2018 Q&A (https://forum.supercell.com/showthre...-Trap-Show-QNA) revealed that there is NO specific flagging of engineered bases. On the other hand, the matchmaker's attempt to match clans with "similar ratios of offensive and defensive power" might result in engineers often matching engineers.
In a Q&A Darian stated that the MM tries to match by TH, but this message says its not a deciding factor. This could mean its no longer a direct factor, it could mean its only a contributing factor.

FAQ 4. OK so defense weight matters, what's my defense weight?

The amount of gold in your war base storages on war day is a representation of your defense weight. Note its different from the amount in your farm base storages, or prep day storages. It's possible this number is scaled or modified in the matchmaking process, but this is how bases are ordered on the roster and is a good approximation at the least. The number can also be seen when scouting a friendly challenge. The key defense at a given level (xbow, inferno, eagle) carries a lot of weight.

FAQ 5. What's my offense weight?

Offense weight exists but cannot be checked as easily as defense weight, though "recommended target" on war day may be a clue. Troops, heroes, and spells all count towards matchmaking, though it remains controversial as to whether they are weighed enough or properly. But if your clan is lopsided (meaning your offense is ahead of your defense) consider that this might contribute to bad matches. Link :-(3.00 onwards) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33o4C6SNess
Key war troops seem to carry heavy weight. This can mean followers of the ".5 sensible upgrade path" become lopsided by adding heavy offense without heavy defense for their particular TH level.

FAQ 6. But my weight is 76k according to an online calculator...

Likely junk numbers. Several online calculators were developed with numbers that a reddit user named Spanser dug out of game files, and he has since said not to trust them. The ClashKings spreadsheet was developed from the bad Spanser numbers. Refuted here - https://forum.supercell.com/showthre...-to-War-weight
Clashkings has modified their model since, but its still wrong. They've lied in the past about being sponsored by SC - https://forum.supercell.com/showthre...ponsored-by-SC (or they were tricked, if you buy that, but trust them now everything's perfectly correct this time!).
Based on my own testing the cocp.it calculator is very accurate, though not often open.

    FAQ 7.
Sorry, but you can't handle FAQ 7.

FAQ 8. How much weight will a specific item add, say an inferno?
Tricky question since weights aren't linear. Add an inferno to your new th10, expect about 5k defense weight increase. Add an inferno to a defenseless base, the weight increase could be ten times larger. Good example of nonlinearity here - https://forum.supercell.com/showthre...gineering-fail.

FAQ 9. How in the world did my th8 match with a th11?

The usual culprit for this kind of apparent mismatch is defense sorting of the war roster. Offense is accounted for in matchmaking (opinions vary as to whether it is counted properly) but bases are sorted by defense only on prep day. A base's mirror is not necessarily the base it "matched".
Another possibility is that in the absence of a fair match (there is simply no clan similar to yours searching at the same time) the matchmaker threw you an unfair one. Or, the th11 base in our example is rushed/engineered to the point that the matchmaker thinks is a fair match.
Imagine that base was somewhere else, at the top of the roster perhaps. Do you still have an overall bad match? Then THAT'S the problem, ignore the position on the roster.

FAQ 10. Bad match here, opponent clan is higher level!

Clan level does little to indicate clan strength and is NOT counted by the matchmaker. Player experience does nothing to indicate clan strength and is NOT counted by the matchmaker.

FAQ 11. I don't understand why SC doesn't stop those engineers from cheating.

SuperCell does not believe engineers are cheating, they are simply optimizing their bases for advantage in response to the matchmaker. However SC is working to reduce the effectiveness of engineering through matchmaking changes. You can see the results in the second half of this post - https://forum.supercell.com/showthre...1#post11433600.

FAQ 12. Obviously SC needs to switch to matching by TH only...

Darian has indicated that there is an attempt to match by TH, but it must be a loose fit because strict townhall matching cannot work. The war pool is huge, but would need to be an order of magnitude larger to allow exact matching by TH. See here for some details - https://forum.supercell.com/showthre...1#post11069019 Note this example shows the difficulty of townhall matching even if it doesn't address variation within townhall level (i.e. fresh vs max). Add gradations within TH level (to account for a fresh TH10 with no infernos or th10 war troops vs a heavy th10 with all the goodies) and the problem worsens.

FAQ 13. Why not add weight to the townhall?

Because the color of the townhall does nothing in and of itself to affect the course of the war. Weight should be (and is) put on things that actually make a difference - camps, spells, troops, defenses. Perhaps those weights should be changed, but there's no benefit to adding weight to what is, in and of itself, a cosmetic difference. Here's Darian on that subject - https://forum.supercell.com/showthre...1#post11015159

FAQ 14. Then why not assign each base a minimum weight equal to the max weight of the townhall below?

The 'blanket' TH-1 "You will be assigned the max weight for the TH directly below your current TH level" has been discussed at length for a long time, and even prominent Youtubers suggested it in 2016, but is fundamentally flawed, and acknowledged to be so both by those Youtubers and recently Darian. The main reason for this is the volume of 'rushed' players. It's common, for people that care enough about clan war to be on this forum, to dismiss the concerns about rushed casual players. But it shouldn't be a surprise if SC continues to care about this large piece of their player base.
    https://forum.supercell.com/showthre...1#post10888449

FAQ 15. Fine, but lets go to one attack for each base so offense-heavy accounts aren't such an issue.
But then war outcome will too often be decided by missed attacks, with no one able to cover for them. In addition to untrustworthy clanmates, real life happens. Disconnects, hand stuck in Pringles can, grandma's on fire. Two attacks at least give a clan a chance to win despite these things, and allow clans to take a chance on a new member. Serious war players might be inclined to say "tough luck," but you won't get SC to ignore the needs of its mostly casual user base.
And it does less to eliminate engineering than you might think. Imagine a 10v10 which is even except for your opponent having two low defense weight th11s at the bottom. Under a "1 attack" standard they can still clear your n1 & n2, allowing the rest of the clan to dip. Balanced engineers would face no penalty.

FAQ 16. But its only offense that matters, matching should be all or at least overwhelmingly done by offense right?
Then prepare for the onslaught of offenseless accounts as anchors, or at least "reverse .5s" that go up a TH to grab infernos or an eagle. Should these ever appear, they shall be known as 9.Tank/10.Tank bases.

FAQ 17. No dip rule then, that'll fix the engineering problem.
This works well in a league system with a rigid roster but would introduce new problems to regular war spins. Sometimes there's a townhall mismatch at the top of a war roster even with no engineering, under a no dip rule that player would be unable to attack at all. Also imagine being at a 3 star deficit on prep day if you war th9-th11, and opponent brings one th8 that you can't attack.

FAQ 18. Why doesn't SC let us hit "next" if we get a bad match?
Sounds good until you think it won't just be you with that option, the other team might do it to you too. We'll never see perfectly fair matches, if "nexting" is allowed we might see no wars actually occur. It would add timing issues as well that are antithetical to a casual game - imagine going to sleep thinking you've got a war, and wake up to find they hit "next". Imagine that happening again and again. It's not reasonable to expect all clans to babysit their war searches to see if they get "nexted", or see if they want to hit "next" themselves. This is a casual mobile game, not a job.

FAQ 19. Why is it taking forever for my clan to find a match?
There are several reasons that your clan could be experiencing an extended search time. The first is simply that you are searching with a very uncommon roster (perhaps unintended).
The second is your roster is intentionally engineered to a point that there are also no suitable matches for your clan. This can be caused by excessive bottom end loading (including low THs in an otherwise high TH clan) or including very exotic or engineered accounts in your roster such as high offense low defense accounts or other unnatural builds.
Consider adding or removing accounts to change the size of war your are searching for potentially giving you a more common line up. Remove any excessive amount of low fillers at the bottom of your roster. Exclude any exotic or unnatural accounts from your roster when you search.
Another alternative is to split the clan. Have a "feeder" clan where the low townhalls war, and the main where the heavies reside.

Wish I could give more than one reputation bump.
Listen, and understand! That New Algorithm is out there! It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pain. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until your win streak is broken.

TY sir. I understand it won't prevent fresh spawn complaints, but perhaps a quick c&p helps focus various posts.

FAQ 15. Why is it taking forever for my clan to find a match?

They are several reasons that your clan could be experiencing an extended search time.

The fist is simply that you are searching with a very uncommon roster (may be unintended).

The second is your roster is intentionally engineered to a point that there are also no suitable matches for your clan. This can be caused by excessive bottom end loading (including an excessive amount of th6's 5's or 3's at the bottom of your roster) or including very exotic (Engineered) accounts in your roster (i.e. high offense low defense accounts or other unnatural builds).

Possible solution: Try adding or removing accounts to change the size of war your are searching for potentially giving you a more common line up. Remove any excessive amount of low fillers at the bottom of your roster. Exclude any exotic or unnatural accounts from your roster when you search.

Tank, you hinted at this in one of the other Faq's, but I feel it needs it's own Faq so it is not so hidden. You can change my wording however you like.
