Here's a simple solution: put your DE storage and drills in the corner. Then it will never get zapped! In fact, it's better if it's zapped! If they do zap it, then you can complain on the forums about the stupidity of the world. And always remember, put TH in same corner as DE drills and storage, and surround then with lvl 8 teslas that come out in the new update!

    SO off-topic...

i can see why people with th7 do it. it is difficult (or at least it was for me) to get your barb king early on but beyond that it should be easier with th8+
i remember i woke up to 5 attacks with just the lightning icons until someone was nice enough to give me a free shield
overall i dont see the skill in this 'strategy' with just tapping the lightning icon and smacking your finger on the d.e. storage
but hey i can't stop people, do what you want

If you are dropping hundreds of trophies to farm, and wiping out players 30 levels below you, you are taking advantage of the trophy matchmaking system. It is unfair to the lower level players, but why do most people, including me, farm? Because it is beneficial. It makes us progress in the game. I think that the TH6s don't enjoy it too much when they see all their resources get stolen from level 5 troops.
Now, if you are a townhall 9 or 10, and a townhall 7 lightnings your dark elixir, they are taking advantage of the loot bonus/penalties. It is unfair to the people being lightninged, but it is beneficial to the person who use the lightnings against the dark elixir storage. It sucks that they could use a cheap trick to get dark elixir, but that is the easiest way they progress in the game.
I am not bashing these styles of playing the game, and if any of you misunderstand, I think that there is nothing wrong with farming. I just think there might be something wrong with me complaining about how my centered DE has been lightninged when I just finished raiding a Townhall 6 who had spent a lot of time protecting his gold and elixir.
I don't know. Maybe most people have a different perspective? If you disagree, please fill me in in the comments, so I could learn more about this game.

    Thanks for your time.

If a th8 attacked a th6, they would only get 50%, so no one attacks th6's. It is more along the lines or th9's attacking th8's bud

Why lightning DE is a valid strategy and why its a problem.

Why its a valid strategy is simple... it works. Its a great and easy way to farm for DE which is very rare up to th 9. The problem lies in the fact that all of your DE is localized in one storage that has roughly the twice the hp as a gold storage. So even if a gold storage is completely destroyed by lightning you will only lose at most 50% of the gold(assuming th7 or lower with two storages), available for raiding, to lightning. Whereas on a full de storage 3 or 4 lightning spells can get you pretty close to that 2000 cap that was set (which is a great change). And since a lot of DE is a curse it is not uncommon to get lightning attacked two or three times in a row.resulting in the loss of 5000+ DE in less than an hour (Ive seen this happen) and that equates to many hours of lost time for something you have absolutely no defense against. The only thing you can do is to max the de storage lvl as high as you can. The amount of de lost is proportional to the % damage the storage takes. Increase the amount of hitpoints for the de and this reduces the overall % damage that lightning can do to a storage therefore reducing the amount of de you lose.

As for a real fix. The only logical solution would be to add a second de storage. A move I feel is likely inevitable with the future introduction of new dark troops anyway.

They will probably just add another level to the current DE storage...
