For me, there is no real incentive to gain trophies. The loot bonus at my level is so small compared to my raid loot that I barely notice it. This new idea might actually force people to start trophy hunting a little more and to actually have incentive.
At the end of each season, the top three players in a league should receive a fairly good prize in gold/elixer/dark elixer. Maybe even some gems could be added to the prize.
To prevent people of a higher league from just deliberately losing trophies to get into the league below them to win the prize, there should be a higher threshold for demotion from a league. Say 200 trophies past the minimum will result in a demotion. (Say if you were a Gold III trying to get into Silver I, you would need to lose at least 200 trophies so that you start at 1200).
Another consideration is that the matchmaking process for attacks should search your specific league first, before it searches anywhere else. This, in addition to league chat (Already ruled out in the sticky), should make leagues have more significance than before
