It's always amazing to me when I see a new-ish feature being taken for granted because there was no experience with the old way of doing things. And that's not a criticism, that's just how it is. I never had to wait four hours for my spells, but I never liked that they took 30-45 minutes when I started playing.
Troops used to train in parallel with one another, but they had significantly longer training times. Wizards weren't done in thirty seconds, they took eight minutes. So yeah, you could train four at a time, but you'd still only get four in eight minutes. Now they're trained in series, but they only take thirty seconds. So the same eight minutes gets you sixteen wizards instead of four
