My clanmate had a Golem for attacking but was raiding (long story) but I saw the replay and it actually worked out pretty well. The golem just went to a place where the guy massed 50-70 Level 5 Archers and all of the Archers targeted it and they were all wiped out by a Mortar (lol). Not to mention it did considerable damage when it died.
Dragon and wizards or only archers.
If CC cannot be lured out I would say that witches are the best at defense. They will be triggered only when the attacker has broken inside the walls. Then witches will stay inside and keep sending skeletons. Nothing can defeat that i think. However, if witches are lured out, they are very vulnerable. Just deploy a few bars directly at her once lured out of defenses reach.
If CC can be lured out then Drag lvl 3 is the best I think.
My fave combos are...
- 7 Wizards & 2 Archers.
- 1 Dragon & 10 Archers.
- 1 Dragon, 2 Wizards & 2 Archers.
or on the 4th of every month...
- 1 Bloon, 1 Giant, 1 Wall Breaker, Gobs, Archers & Barbs!!

You can't lighting a dragon, plus splash damage... Dragon/Wizard/Archer takes the cake for best for defense. Offense is another matter.
It all depends of if you want to use it to attack or defend...
i chose archers because when you
--attack:
- more troops and range could get you to 50% if needed or a full collector
--defence
-pros: they ♥♥♥♥ giants and pekkas take them out one by one, so it takes a while to take out 30 archers whereas its easier to take out 6 wizards
-cons: lightning on archers
