What's going on? I'm a pretty new player, and I'd appreciate any help y'all can give me. I have a TH lvl. 5 going on 6 and a Troop Capacity of 120. I'll take any tips or comments on base layout. I've gemmed a couple of times to get an extra builder and speed up a couple of upgrades, but I probably won't be doing that anymore. Like I said, I appreciate any help y'all can give me. This seems like a pretty active and helpful community, so thanks in advance.

Before moving on to the next town hall level you should always be maxed out. That is in research perspective and upgrade perspective. There should not be a single thing being able to level up except your town hall (or atleast time it so all upgrades come through at the same time). Walls, towers, barracks. You name it.
Do that and you'll succeed!

your base looks ok granted limited amount of walls. Other than that check clashofclansbuilder.com for some options on base designs.
As for the common knowledge:
1) getting all 5 builders makes the game more fun
2) gemming anything else make game shorter and thus not fun.
3) use spare gems to boost troops — faster troops = more battles and more fun
4) upgrade aoe defenses first
5) fully max out base on all TH levels or at least dont go past TH7-8 without upgrading core buildings
6) best farming range is at around 900-1000 cups for low level TH. Best farming range for dark elixir is 1300+
7) upgrade troops — archers first, then whatever you like
8) fastest farming army is archers+barbs +random small amount of everything else, like wbs. Even though dragons, ballons, wizards, healers etc are stronger they take too long to build and thus you get less gold per hour if you are playing actively.
9) Sometimes keeping town hall outside of the walls is good, especially when you have lots of gold in storages. Better to loose 1 star then 2+ stars and money.

I think at this point, the best thing you can do is to join a clan. Rebuild your clan castle, then go to the clan talk section of the forum. I was TH4 when I joined my clan (Thunderbears) and the help and information they shared with me were invaluable. There are a lot of good clans and just sift through the threads. Of course I'm partial to the Bear Family of clans, but do look around for something that will fit you.
With troops in the clan castle, you have additional defense and they can also be used for offense. At that TH level, it's sometimes nice to get lvl 5 or lvl 6 archers in the cc. When you get to TH 6, you can even fit a dragon in there.
With respect to gems, I gemmed the 3rd and 4th builders at around the same level as you are now. It really helps to have those builders early on.
Upgrade your lab as soon as you can, and upgrade your troops, barracks and camps whenever possible. I think silver 3 was a good place to raid, but things might have changed now.
