Over-trophied at TH5. Explanations and recommendations welcomed!

I'd really appreciate veteran player inputs on my current situation.
Here's my tale:
I am the Clan Leader for 'Silver Dolphins', currently sitting around 1800 Trophies at Gold I.
I've been working on maxing my defenses for the last few days before making the jump to TH6. I had intended to drop trophies (I've been getting destroyed on defense when AFK by TH8-10 attackers) after getting to Gold I but since the latest update I have been slowly pushing for Crystal III to get the gems from the new achievement (I only have 3 builders so far, no $ invested). It isn't easy but I've been making progress slowly. I am the only TH5 in any of the Gold leagues when playing - most are TH8-10, with the occasional 7 here or there.
My Clan is mostly Silver I-III with a few Gold3's and Bronzes. Our average TH level is 6, with a few 7's and 8's and a few 4's. Silver leagues seems to be a sweet spot for many of us and though I am also the Trophy leader for my Clan, I'm one of the lowest in terms of TH and experience levels. There is a healthy and fun trophy competition going on with most in our Clan (we have a few farmers who don't worry about it), and I enjoy leading from the front in that regard.
I do not have very much experience playing (only a few weeks), and I was hoping someone could describe the TH level difference regarding attacks in layman's terms to me and also clearly lay out the error of my ways. I've been getting many comments in Global about being way over-trophied and how that is a horrible thing. Please explain why that is so awful. It seems to me that attacking from TH5 that if I'm beating the TH7-8 guys the bonuses are making it worth the effort, but I've never really done the math. If there is a Math wizard who could provide examples of how and why what I'm doing doesn't make sense, that would be greatly appreciated.
I sort of like being the small piranha in a room full of sharks, under levelled and under-equipped compared to the rest in my league but still making forward progress. But if I'm way out in left field, I wouldn't mind changing tactics. I'm having fun which is the main thing, and the league bonuses at G1 (13k gold/elixir) is enough to fund my army raids without losing resources (I have more elixir than I can handle, which I've heard is common). If I hit a plateau that becomes frustrating (I went all the way to Silver I at TH4 before I had to upgrade to TH5 for better Archers)

It's all up to you. If you want to stand a chance i say drop trophies if you want to be the top player in your clan stay up there. Totally and completely your decision. I think you should drop and max your stuff out then fight your way back up.

I think I understand what you are saying. Being top Chief is not a big thing for me, though I do think it is an incentive for my Clan family to improve themselves. I was thinking of just staying at G1 (or Crystal3 if I can get there) until the next season began, then drop trophies back to Silver 2 or 3 or even lower maybe.
What would you recommend as a stopping point if I decide to dump trophies?
I love beating up the big guys too, but only got into it at TH7. Do whatever is fun for you, and if you need gold for upgrades just be sure to look around plenty for those raids where people haven't logged on and emptied their collectors (I'm sure you know that by now, though).
If you want to get to Crystal, well, you're gonna find that tough unless you start to enjoy looking for town halls to snipe, but you'll see yourself. I'm surprised you don't see many TH7 where you are, but hey, I haven't been in Gold much lately.
As for the maths, it's pretty simple - you'll get a heap more loot by raiding someone at least +2 TH above you.
Raid smart, and you can succeed in whatever way you like - don't let people tell you you're doing it wrong... For example, only let your base get smashed twice a day, i.e. raid in two decent sized blocks, then you won't lose too many trophies or loot (assuming you haven't spent the loot by by the time you log off).
If you post a picture that would be great so i can elaborate more and you might like beating up on the but when I see that I go take some easy trophies so it might be fun but the higher u go more revenges are gonna come
I think you should go up to crystal for gems, try to get 4th builder, its real helpful. If you can get 5, do it.
You most likely will find that Inactive TH8 up there and the loot penalty and bonus would help a lot. Good luck
I'm at work right now so I can't post a picture. You wanted a picture of my base? It is basically a slightly modified version of Flammy's TH5 base setup.
But if you go in game and search "Silver Dolphins" we are the only clan with that name.
I am the Clan Leader, so it should be easy to see me (I was ~200 trophies higher than everyone else yesterday, couldn't play today). Feel free to snap a pic yourself and post it along with any commentary.
Dropping 50-60 Shields a day from defense losses isn't fun, but the shields while I'm working/sleeping are very nice.
I built up my walls before upgrading all my defensive structures, which in hindsight was a mistake. But then again, like you inferred, I occasionally get 3-starred from an angry TH10 person on a revenge strike.
I actually enjoy that, because of the TH difference penalty, they spend a 50k+ attacking and take home 5k in resources. Pyrrhic victory at its best.

You've done a great job as townhall 5 and if you're having fun playing the way you have been then you don't have to change a thing! Basically you don't stand a chance defensively because you are going to get trampled by virtually any army up there being the "little guy". However if you are attacking and winning and the bonuses are keeping you afloat, I don't see why you shouldn't try to push for Crystal and see if you can get those gems! After that I would advise dropping trophies to farm more efficiently though, just because in general you will be impeding your overall progress by staying up that high.
It's all up to you in the end, like I said if you're having fun that's most important. Alot of people on forums are hardcore farmers, so many of the replies/opinions you get here will be from the perspective of "if you aren't farming efficiently you're doing it wrong"... so please just try to keep that in mind when others critique your playstyle!
So I made it up to 1855 and then things became noticeably tougher. Just finding targets to snipe would take several minutes, and I learned the hard way to just ignore anything with an Inferno Tower...
After a string of defeats (defensively while at work for 30+ hrs plus a few attacks gone bad) I found myself back down in the low 1700's. One loss cost 27-38 trophies each, and my progress was becoming a grind. After dropping to 1698, I learned a harsh fact - I was demoted. Embarrassing more that I didn't know that was possible. For some reason I thought you kept your highest badge achieved until the new season reset. Wrong!
Looking at a long climb back to 1800 to regain Gold I, I decided to go the other way and slowly dumped trophies (gathering resources along the way) down to the low 900's. I have paid for the upgrade to TH6 (3 days & many hours left) and have walls, storages, and defenses max'd, and will be upgrading collectors while waiting.
Last night I won my first defense in over a week, and intermittent raiding in the 900's has been fun so far. I found out I can view someone's highest trophy count by using the Profile feature and reading the fine print for one of the Achievements, and that is good enough for me - I don't need to be the cups leader as clan leader- my highest cup count is several hundred over theirs, and they know that, so I don't feel pressured to stay up there just for posturing. Recruiting has taken a hit, but I'd rather we grow slowly with better members instead of just using the "grab everyone you can, throw 'em against the Town Hall wall, and see who sticks around" methods we had been using.
