Of the grey dots you saw, do you recall if the comments were positive or negative? If they were positive, then you're right and I stand corrected. Thank you.

And thus, based on your recollection, the presence of comments may not indicate that it was a downvote and may be an upvote.

About 1/2 of the upvotes I have received have comments, the others don't. They all have a little green box like the one shown under our name when we post. I did cast 1 down vote, and although I can't readily find it now, it had a red box next to it on the page where it shows not only the votes for/against you, but also those you made for/against someone else.

But seeing this has come up, I also agree with the questions about neutrals - what is the point in giving members with fewer than 50 posts voting power at all if it shows as a neutral? I've received one - it has since dropped off my reputation tab, but from memory there was no comment attached, so I assume it was a positive (negatives have to have a comment, right?), but it seems an exercise in futility both for the voters and the recipients. Is it a technical thing?

Yes, it is just the way it works. I don't think there was an option to stop people with no rep power from attempting to give rep.

Indeed, if downvoting is retained for the FRS, I suggest the recipients of negative comments be allowed to see the identities of those who left them because it's the only check against those of us who need to exercise self-restraint. If we post negative comments, we should've the conviction to stand behind them instead of sending them anonymously, IMO.

Neutrals could mean someone upvoted or downvoted your posts. Since they wrote less than 50 posts in the forums, they won't be able to increase or decrease your reputation points. You know it's an upvote because they don't need to leave a comment. However, when you see comments, then it's a downvote because leaving comments is mandatory after clicking the Disapproval Button.
You can leave comments for upvotes too, they just aren't mandatory. So you don't know it would have been a downvote if there is a comment, you have to look at what the comment said.

I think it's completely appropriate - and even wonderful - that you do, and I wish there more forumers who would join in forum conversations. Especially if they haven't even posted before. Because, collectively, the strongest driving forces behind this forum are Lurkers. People viewing this forum quietly without posting. A common reason that people post here about Hay Day rather than elsewhere is that there's a built-in audience that comes with an official company message board. Those lurkers matter. People post here - in great part - because people will read what they write here.

And I'm sure some of those lurkers have strong opinions about the game and the forum. Their views are no less valid than someone who's got an excessively-high post count. And I wish more felt welcome to post, because a higher number of active participants makes for a healthier forum usually.

I think, sometimes, this forum - although it's deemed "nice", etc. etc. occasionally sends out signals of being kind of cliquish and unwelcoming.

I think the main reason for ‘lurkers’ like me to post only occasionally is that the game is already somewhat older and most of the questions can easily be answered with the help of the ‘search’ function. The few remaining questions that I posted here, mainly about the new friend book, were perfectly and elaborately answered by the community.

At this point, thank you very much to all the enthusiastic and helpful forumers, present and past, who prevented me from stopping the game at level 18!

I've been reading this thread with interest, as it has developed. My own thoughts - for what they are worth - are that I cannot imagine a scenario where I would give a downvote.

Some years ago, in the early days of e-readers I was fortunate enough to be give one as a gift. After a short while I joined the forum. I soon posted my first thread. It was innocuous; a simple comment that I was enjoying the experience of using an e-reader, but the one aspect that I disliked was that I no longer saw the cover of a physical book. I went on to say that it was possible for me to reach the end of an e-book and not know the title, or the author's name.

A short while later another member of the forum responded with a harsh reply, totally rubbishing my post. In fairness, eventually another member responded kindly to me, and went to great lengths to explain that, as a teacher, she was very aware of different styles of learning, and I was obviously a visual learner.

Unfortunately, the damage was done - I never posted on that forum again.

That experience had a continuing effect on me, and I avoided forums. I started playing Hay Day soon after it was released on Android, and discovered this forum soon afterwards. I lurked for many months, not having the courage to join. Eventually I did - I recall starting my first post by saying "please treat me gently - this is my first post".

The lovely LadyJEMS was the first to respond, and was kind, helpful and encouraging. I was hooked!

What worries me about the downvote system is that it is a very blunt tool that can be used swiftly and without consideration. We don't know what is going on in others' lives, and what they are having to deal with. We don't know how they are feeling at that particular moment. Someone who gives the appearance of being robust may simply be putting on a brave front. That particularly applies to newer members, imo.

We will all benefit from new members joining, and bringing fresh ideas. If that doesn't happen the forum will become less relevant. New members need to be encouraged, and I am concerned that downvote system will work against that.

This topic is still on-going and the same people keep saying the same over and over. Hay Day either has deaf ears or they think others do want this voting up down and neutral system which seems to mean you say a lot your opinion is better than mine.

My opinion is for other games and interests on forums I have seen a "Thank You" button or "I found this post helpful" box where your names show if someone helped you or writes something good. This way the thanks stay with the words that were helpful in that place and show better why that person was helpful. Just because someone said good words in one place does not mean what they say in another place is good. That is what this reputation system looks to me like. That you say more, you have more friends, you have more reputation, so your opinion is better.

This up down only in my opinion also makes people have clique mentality to vote down someone who thinks negatively about the words of one of their friends and makes them also vote up their friends for words and posts that contributed nothing of substance to give them a buffer for being bullies in other places. Also replacing the voting with just up votes will not change those people's behavior to be aggressive. If Hay Day wants to see silent people talk here then a place needs to friendly and not dominated by a select few who force their opinions on others always.

One thing is for sure , The players that now is afraid to write on forum will bee more afraid ! The players that dont have Engelska as first language will have a disadvantage ! The players that dont write often will get lower Rep lewel , And this even if they as I are on a higher level and are more experienst in in PLayeing HD then most writeing in the forum . And so they will bee connsiderered for minor ! Then the talk alots . THE POLIICIANS for more !

Ok, I wire brushed my brain cells and got some of the rust off of them. Now I can think about this and this is what I think.

The reputation thing is flawed; make it go away!

It was designed to be a popularity contest and it works well for that. So well in fact that it has been modified to stop people from using it too much on the same people. If it were designed as a "post" commenting system, then the little green and red boxes would have been designed to have appeared on posts and not the forum members.

The complexity of doing a poll goes to show that there were probably ways of designing a board that would have allowed for rate quoting any given post and commenting under the quote one agreed with, disagreed with, thought was funny...etc. So many colors - so many emoties could have been selected options one could have used to quote and rate a post and not the poster.

Pretending this popularity contest isn't a popularity contest is unwise. It is "putting lipstick on pigs."
They don't want a beauty contest they just want to be content and eat their carrots.
