The Golem is not just a Giant clone. Giants are a lot smaller, and groups of them are able to dish out more damage than a single Golem. Golems make single-staged attacks a little easier, as you don't need to worry about keeping a group of giants alive. Giants are cheaper, and may still be used in war for varied strategies. Your statement is not relevant.
Overall, I think higher level gameplay is in need of an additional Golem level only. Defenses in general are the problem, and I don't think a troop like the Centaur(Prioritizing only splash-damage defenses) will be sufficient enough or necessary. I'm curious what your TH level is, let me know.
The problem with many of the people in this sub-forum is that many of them are not TH10's or 11's yet, and will simply say yes to anything, hoping that they will be able to use it. Keep that in mind.
