My prediction is:
Before the update bot farms where working.
With the new update their software is not compatible with the game. So all bot operation is shut down until they create a compatible bot. Fingers crossed that it'll take long but i fear they are already working on it intensely.
Game designers have tweaked (long before the update) the ads that you can have in your newspapers. So that you could see something other than wheat in your DD versions. So in order to have some variety in the news paper, for example one wheat ad showed up on DD of 3 people, whereas a carrot, soybean and sugarcane ad showing up for 10 people. And more premium adds for 20+ people.
Now since the bot wheat is gone and there is nothing to show on DD other than normal stuff (what people usually sell: chili popcorns, pumpkin pie, wooly chaps etc.) is showing up more and rare stuff is showing even more. Consider instead of 20 people, you are racing with 100 people to get that plank. That means you will win 1 out of 10 times if you are one of the best shoppers in game.
Also add the fact that phone users have TERRIBLE DISADVANTAGE over tablet users, you have NO chance of winning if you are competing against a tablet user, even with a slower connection and incompetent hands, a tablet user has always the first dibs on.
Unless: the add is on the first two pages of the paper where phone user do not have to flip pages, AND the stuff is placed on the first 4 slots of the shop where a phone user do not have to scroll down on the shop.
It is really silly to keep the phone the layout where phones have 5.5" or 5.7" of screens with QHD or even 4K resolutions. This game still works on a layout that worked 4 years ago.
I agree, something more than the bots going is affecting the DD. Even full price wheat sell immediately & no one buys that unless your totally out of wheat & need a quick boost !!. It took me 2 papers to buy eggs so buying upgrade materials is impossible.
Like others have said, it's like a thousand people buying from one paper & it doesn't matter how fast you are, you won't get them. I'm play on an brand new iPad Air & I'm not slow either but I have no chance.
I have played pretty much from day one & if this carries on there isn't much point in playing as I don't have the time to hunt for eggs/veg let alone upgrade items.
Also, I realised about 2-3 weeks ago that I hadn't seen a bot farm for weeks & the DD was fine, but since the update...NOT !.

Hello my neigbourhood had als that problemen afther the update we hij want tot buy something it is already sold the paper is turning als very slow we have very different tablets old new so that van,t be the problem pleasse help it,s nog fun anymore

Since the update there's a greater variety of goods offered in the dd. And the bots are gone *fingers crossed it stays the same. Yeah, products sell very fast, but maybe it's simply because people see other goods than wheat only and so they are quicker to get them. When the dd was flooded with (bot) wheat, people had to open every ad to see whether there's anything else in the rss - that takes longer.
I don't have big problems catching some nice goods from the dd when it's just refreshed. 10-15 seconds later it's nearly impossible to get anything, but I think it's because everyone is trying to catch anything fast which is not wheat (or even wheat as there are no bots at the moment).
I can never understand why people are selling those bolts by the dozens. They're in a full NH with plenty low level players and yet they just prefer to sell it on the DD. That said, I had some luck with those bems if the ad was on the first page of my paper, else no.
I'm seeing bots returning now - just one per paper so far (as opposed to the 8+ there were before the update). I imagine wheat will start overtaking other products soon enough.

Guess I got this shopping thing down pretty good
