If you're rich and can buy all the diamonds you want, you can buy an upgrade whenever you want. Click on "increase storage," and it will give you the price in diamonds to get the expansion items...

Maybe SC should consider having a legal market, where people can sell items to each other for cash (with SC taking a cut, of course).
