TH9...what to upgrade next?

I've decided to put a little time into my TH9 base defenses. All structures are TH8 max, I've already maxed inactive structures like CC, camps, storages, lab, spell factories, and so forth. I bought the x-bows as well. Now it is time to work on upgrading the defenses.

Archer towers? Wizard towers? X-bows? AD and AS? Teslas? Mortars?

My inclination is to go first with the teslas (they take an eternity), then the x-bows up one to L2, then the mortars, cannons, archer and wizard towers, and finally AD/AS followed by the last level on the x-bows. My reasoning - with all the changes in December, and the ones that are coming, strengthening the core further seems to make sense. That would be the teslas (level 7 teslas really are something). The x-bow is decent against ground troops, but it really starts to shine at level 2 and going to level 3 isn't nearly as much a boost in raw damage power as going from level 1 to level 2. The mortars do great splash damage and after that it becomes more personal preference as the impact of each subsequent upgrade is roughly the same to the defensive line up.

What do you guys think?

Well, I have nearly maxed my th9 defenses, but I haven't got the x-bows. I'm ranked pretty low in war, so I have no problem 3 starring my equal. Anyways, I tried to be war consciences with my upgrades. I started out with teslas(highest damage, but low weight, and a nasty surprise); next, I upped my cannons, (they're cheap and a gowipe deterrant); then air defences(also fairly light) and archer towers. I still have my wizard towers and mortars to do, since they're really heavy. My heroes just became teeagers and im almost halfway done with my lego walls. I'll probably get my xbows in the next week or so.:thumbsup:

Teslas first. They absolutely destroy royals. Then xbows to lvl2. Get your AD's to lvl6 and your AS's to lvl4. Then AT to lvl 11 since they hit air and ground troops. I would probably do mortars last. I would have to double check the DPS but I don't think the extra level is as important on them as on WT.

I'm a max D TH9 - I approve this order of upgrading.

Though sometimes I did cheaper quicker stuff either because I didnt have the resources or I wanted to manage when builders were coming free. But this is a general good order though I think you meant ADs to 7 as they go to 6 at TH8.

And I might put WTs ahead of ADs or concurrent with them.

And x-bow 3 is a great upgrade IMO 15 extra DPS and the 200? extra HP both really nice buffs. Nothing quite like 2 L 3 x-bows and 2 other point defences hitting a Queeler at the same time to slow/stop that attack.

I meant the new AD to lvl6 and make sure all the others are 6 too. I think lvl7 AD's could be one of the last upgrades since most attacks go ground at TH9.

If someone goes air, it is usually in war, and it's a TH10 with Lavaloon. I don't know if the extra lvl would really help in that case. I am not certain of that. Someone could prove me wrong but I have been Lavaloon'd once in war and I doubt the extra AD levels would have stopped it. Of course my war base is set to to defend specifically against ground attacks.

Yeah that's fair. I maxed my ADs kind of "in the middle". What it does is stop folks who are raiding with 2-L5 light and 1 EQ from farming your base.

You are right if a TH10 hits you with a competent PentaLavaLoon there is nothing you can do about it even as a full max defense 9. That is the only attack that has 3 stared my base since all defenses have been maxed.

I looked at Ash's sheet...I don't completely agree with his order, start to finish. For example, my first order of business was getting all of the new stuff at the same level as the old stuff, and I focused my first couple of months almost entirely on offense - lab, factories, troop upgrades, AQ to level 5. I definitely think Teslas should come before the other towers, as well as x-bow to level 2.

Since most attacks at TH8 and TH9 seem to be ground attacks, I was thinking mortars ahead of towers. Interesting that you guys put mortars closer to the end. Do you not see as many ground attacks or are you finding the mortars less effective than the archer/wizard towers?

I've kept the traps to use as fillers whilst I'm updating the towers; everything is at TH8 max levels and I have all 5 builders, so I figure I can work on a few cannons then dump gold into the bombs (for example) while I wait for the first round of cannons finish...that sort of thing.

Mortars are slow to fire, which means they miss a lot. They only one shot barbs and archers. Lvl5+ Wizards can take at least two shots of lvl7 mortars (maybe 3, i don't remember). AT's fire so fast now they can mow down your wizards in a matter of seconds. Since most people at TH9 and above use Golems in some form during the attack mortars just waste shots on them.

Good point; I had not considered it from that perspective. So....

Yeah through Th8 I prioritized mortars early to nerf Barch against me. If you are a decent 9 you won't see many successful Barch attacks against your base and Mortars don't stop giants nearly as effectively as Wiz Towers do while they bang away at walls. And other than stoping witches, they don't really help you much in war.
