Can you 3 star a lo-mid th9 with low-mid heroes?

That is utter nonsense. You most certainly can, and often quite easily, 3* low to mid TH9s with, "low level" heroes. Troop upgrades are important though.

Note that TH8.5 is less appealing in my mind with the recent update. You get lit up often and ugly...

Ya, my clan has accelerated the TH8.5 build because of this. We now let our members build new tesla and airdef to max TH8 level after heroes are 10/10. We then let them buy all other defenses and level them to max TH9(except xbows which stay at lvl 1) once their heroes are 15/15. Then, at 20/20 heroes you can max your bows. From there, master all troops and strategies.

We have a clan member much like you. He's picked up 11 stars in our last 2 wars against low to mid 9s. It can be done.

He uses GoHo almost exclusively in his attacks so needs to pick the right bases to path his hogs. First war was 6 stars with Lvl 4 hogs, 2nd war was 5 stars with lvl 5 Hogs.

I have Bk at 10, AQ at 7 and still I am able to 3 star a Th9 with GoHo. My success rate has been 75% for 3 stars. The only thing with GoHo is that when it fails I only get 1 star. But my clan is not complaining at all! You will find lot of useful attack replay at this link How to 3 star on a TH9 which you can refer!

Well, I did both of my war attacks today without my queen (she's going to 8) and 6 starred. I did a pentaloon on a new 9 (3lvl6 ad's 1 lvl4) loons were my 1st/only lab upgrade so far. Then I did a goho (with lvl 4 hogs yikes) on th9 with all everything thing upgraded to th8 level plus 1 lvl 1 xbow. Both attacks were a little messy (I'd never even built a hound before) but they got the job done. Thanks for all of the advice, it looks like I have some goho practice to do. After my hogs finish I'll go heal/jump, I was debating between heal, golem or giants (hey a girl has to farm). Thanks so much!
