Thoughts about Clash going "downhill" can be characterized in many ways, quite a few of them aren't necessarily visible to the players (revenue, number of ACTIVE players, etc.). If you are curious, I think there are sites which track number of downloads, per app, per update.

all sorts of statistics interest me since they are hard facts which cannot be disputed. Using proper forecasting SC and CoC can see if certain changes need to be made.
The changes have affected me in certain ways which include :
no more dead bases, at times when i have days off (like over the holidays) i get kicked off for personal break times. most of the time when i get attacked its just for 30minute shields since people are just mostly trophy dropping. Unless i have 300k gold elix and 1k de no one will raid me.

Otherwise this is a very fun and addicting game as evident by my spending.

I would say 15 dollars a day is definitely a whale amount. I would probably gem upgrade times and boost my barracks for 4 hours a day if I could afford it, but unfortunately that amount of money is worth a lot more here than it is in the USA.

You're getting to the "grind" part of the game OP where upgrades are way more expensive and time way longer. Under the old shield system, you had a chance to save for those with minimal loss on defense usually.

With the new system, you're gonna get wrecked everytime you come close to your upgrade goal. Since you said you work regularly, I doubt you'll have time to get on and use 3 attacks during your shield to make back what you lose...so you options are, continue to pay (might have to start gemming resources as well)...or, quit your job and spend every waking moment glued to your screen

Progressing in the older version was a struggle in itself....now, fork over the cash or your life. No in between
